Bothasig: According to D/Capt Carleigh Noemdo, the Bothasig detective commander, it is always very gratifying when a good investigation secures a good conviction in court. It is even better when the investigation officer is a newer member at the detective branch.

The conviction D/Capt Noemdo refers to stems from an armed robbery incident that occurred during November 2020, at a residence in Edgemead. The complainant and his wife had arrived at their residence to find the driveway blocked by an unknown vehicle. The driver was requested to move the vehicle for the residents to enter their premises, which he did. After parking, the residents who were still inside their vehicle, were approached by two occupants of the vehicle that had parked in front of their drive way. One of them was armed with a firearm and proceeded to rob the residents of their wallets and valuables. They then went back to the waiting vehicle which sped off.

Members from Bothasig police attended and secured the crime scene and ensured that the particulars of the vehicle used by the suspects were circulated to all police vehicles on patrol.

Later the same day members from the Flying Squad patrolling in Wynberg spotted the vehicle after receiving information that the occupants were robbing people, and a chase ensued. The vehicle was pulled over and the occupants arrested or being in possession of presumed stolen property, and possession of an illegal firearm, as the firearm used in Edgemead was also recovered.

The suspects, aged between 32 and 34, appeared in court on various charges. The suspect with the firearm was found guilty on charges of robbery with a firearm and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition property. He received a sentence of 12 years of which 4 years were suspended for 5 years, effectively sending him to jail for eight years.

The station commander, Lt Col Khunjulwa Khanyile was also very appreciative of the good work done by Const Mofokeng by securing the good sentence through a thorough investigation. The complaints were also very complementary and happy with the outcome of\f the case.
