EASTERN CAPE – March Ndlovu (57), Douglas Mpofu (60) and the business entity, Karbal Trading 60 CC were released on warning by the East London Magistrates' Court after their arrest on 30 September 2021 by the East London based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks for allegations of tax fraud.

It is reported that Ndlovu is the director of a company called Karbal Trading 60 CC which was registered at the South African Revenue Services (SARS) for tax. Mpofu was an accountant hired by the director to assist in claiming tax refunds at SARS in July 2018. Mpofu is alleged to have colluded with Ndlovu and submitted income tax returns with false information for purposes of claiming tax refund from 2013 tax season.

The company was subjected to auditing by SARS where discrepancies were identified. SARS lodged a complaint with the Hawks where the investigation confirmed a potential loss of more than R12 million. The accused made ashort court appearance immediately after the arrest. The matter was postponed to 11 November 2021 to set a trial date.
