ADDRESSING GENDER BASED VIOLENCE: LICHTENBURG

On Friday, 4 March 2022, Lichtenburg Women's Network in collaboration with all accounting stations, re-launched the Women’s structure at Lichtenburg South African Vroue Federasie (SAVF) under the leadership of Captain Bogatsu. The function of the Network was enormously affected since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The program commenced with the opening and prayer by Sergeant Moholo, followed by Admin Clerk Kuane welcoming all attended. Candle lighting was conducted by the Wellness Champions  highlighting HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, COVID-19,  GBV and Femicide. The purpose of the gathering was presented by Capt Bogatsu, who emphasized that Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Femmicide and Domestic Violence (DV) is an ongoing challenge.

The ladies were entertained by the Thusanang Trauma Centre, demonstrating GBV and DV with a play. Pastor Mokgatle encouraged women to speak out, to support one another and to never be afraid of being shamed.

Women were all beautifully dressed up in white, wearing a doek in a specific colour, according to each station's choice. Gifts were presented by Sergeant Mohitlheng, Constable Mogaadile and Admin Clerk Chabalala. Donations received for toiletries from all stations, will be donated to an underprivileged school, which will be identified.

At the end of the program the Deputy Chairperson of Lichtenburg Women's Network thanked all the guests and members for gracing the event with their presence. All women was extremely excited to make a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate.

In another GBV campaign, Mooinooi SAPS and the Community Police Forum (CPF) Executive Committee held an awareness campaign at the Holy God Ministries Church in Bapong on Sunday, 6 March 2022.

Community members were sensitized on GBV and police assistance was explained. The importance of reporting these heinous crimes and the type of service and assistance the congregation can expect from the police were highlighted.

During the presentation pamphlets on GBV, personal safety and sexual harassment were distributed as well as fridge magnets and key holders with the station contact numbers on them.
