COMMUNITIES ARE WARNED TO BE CAUTIOUS AT THE RIVERS AFTER FIVE PEOPLE DROWNED AT WESSELSBRON

FREE STATE:14 March 2022 - The church congregants were at the river to do some rituals when five people drowned. People must avoid the water especially when they do not know how to swim.  They are also encouraged to use alternative routes rather than driving across over flowing rivers.

This follows the incident  on Saturday, 12 March 2022 at about 13:30 Wesselsbron  where SAPS was informed about people who drowned at Vet river on the R719 Wesselsbron /Bultfontein road.

It is alleged that a female congregant was holding her daughter (12) during the baptism inside the river when she lost control of her and she was swept by the water.

Other members of the church tried to rescue the child from drowning, but they were also swept by the strong current and drowned.

The deceased were Kelebohile Katotsa (12), Tefo Katotsa (39),  Tshediso Manong ( 29), Tshepo Moleleki (34), Shemanyane (37). Divers were summoned to the scene and the bodies were retrieved from the river

The other incident happened on the R30 road between Allanridge and Bothaville where a car was swept away into the deep water next to the road. Four passengers managed to escape from the sinking car.

Church congregants are warned to avoid the rivers to do their rituals especially when they do not know how to swim.
