EASTERN  CAPE - In a sting operation, seven suspects with aged between 27 and 47 were arrested by the Gqeberha based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks on 9 May 2022 for allegations of contravention of the Riotous Assemblies Act and conspiracy to contravene the Marine Living Resources Act.

The movement of rubber ducks involved with the illegal abalone poaching at night were monitored over a period of time. It was established that the rubber ducks were launched illegally into the Swarkopriver near the Redhouse village.

On Monday, 9 May 2022 an observation was done at a deserted space next to the Swarkopriver. Two bakkies towing rubber ducks are reported to have arrived almost simultaneously at the illegal launching site.

The members approached the rubber duck pullers as they were about to launch the rubberducks into the river. Thè occupants of one bakkie surrendered while the occupants of the other one almost ran over a member of the Hawks whilst trying to evade arrest. An additional charge of attempted murder was added.

Two Colt bakkies, two rubber ducks, two chuckling tools and 18 diving cylinders were seized during the arrest. The suspects who are of different nationality will appear in the Gqeberha Magistrates’ Court soon.
