KWAZULU-NATAL – An intelligence driven operation led to the arrest of two men for a cash-in-transit heist. They will be charged and will appear in the Estcourt Magistrates' Court on Monday, 13 June 2022.

It is alleged that on 8 June 2022, the security guards were travelling with the cash vehicle on the R103 highway in Estcourt when they ambushed by a group of eight armed men. The gunmen fired shots at the security guards and tried to blow up the cash van. They were unable to access cash but only the small amount was damaged.

The security guards were also robbed of their service firearms. They were taken to hospital for medical treatment. The Hawks' National Priority Violent Crimes and Tracing Team with National Intervention Unit, Explosives Unit arrested two men on 9 June 2022 in Estcourt.

The investigation led police to a house in Weenen where a rifle, rounds of ammunition and explosives were recovered. The arrest of the alleged mastermind as well as other suspects is imminent as the investigation is continuing.
