WESTERN CAPE: Cooperation between K9 Unit West Coast and security personnel led to the arrest of 30-year-old suspect for possession of stolen goods and tampering with essential infrastructure.

On Friday 2022-06-10 at 06:15 a member attached to the K9 Unit West Coast received a complaint of suspicious persons who were busy stealing copper cables near Saldanha Steel. Suspects were monitored via security cameras. One suspect was arrested whilst carrying cables around his body and shoulders. The member went back to the crime scene where he observed the damage to infrastructure inflicted by the suspect. It appeared to be Telkom cables, which was confirmed by a Telkom technician. The damage to the infrastructure from where these cables were stripped, is estimated at R200 000.

The copper stripped from the infrastructure is sold for next to nothing to legal and illegal scrap yards. A warning is issued to all scrap dealers, is that they are criminalising themselves when they continue to buy copper without verifying the source from which the cables are obtained.

The suspect will appear in the Vredenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 2022-06-13 on the mentioned charges.
