EASTERN CAPE: Sonwabile Maxwell Mjilo (40) will appear in Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 11 July 2022 for sentencing on numerous charges of fraud. This follows Mjilo’s conviction  by the same court on Friday, 08 July 2022.

On 20 September 2013, a case of fraud was reported in Mount Frere after a cloned Standard Bank card was used to purchase large volumes of litres of diesel from Mpiti and Total Fuel Filling Stations in Mount Frere. The matter was reported to Mthatha based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks for probing which culminated in the arrest of Mjilo at Ixopo in KwaZulu Natal in 2016.The investigations revealed that the two filling stations were prejudiced cash to the value of R140 000.

After a number of court appearances, Mjilo who denied the allegations was found guilty after state witnesses brought evidence and testified against him. The case against Mjilo was remanded in custody and  he will be sentenced on 11 July 2022.

In anticipation of a well-deserved sentence, the Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya commended the team for the job well done.
