TAVERN SHOOTER GETS FIVE LIFE SENTENCES: SCOTTBURGH

On Thursday 8 September 2022 the Scottburgh High Court sentenced a 48 year old man for the murder of five men at two taverns in the Mankuntshane and Lamont areas in Margate. On 1 April 2018 one victim was shot dead and two other men sustained gunshot wounds when two unknown men entered the tavern and began shooting. The gunmen then fled.

On 16 April 218 two men entered a tavern and shot four people after forcing them to lie on the floor where after they robbed the tavern and fled. 

After they were arrested, the first accused Sanele Nhlumayo (20) pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced in 2019 in the Pietermaritzburg twelve years imprisonment.

 The second accused, Thulani “Ndende” Nhlumayo was found guilty and sentenced on 8 September 2022 to five life sentences, fifteen years imprisonment for robbery, twelve years for possession of unlicensed firearm, ten years imprisonment for two counts of attempted murder and three year’s imprisonment for unlicensed ammunition. Detectives investigating the cases were Det/Sgt Michelle van Niekerk and Det/Sgt Siphiwosenkosi Hlongwane of Margate Detective Service.

Station Commander of SAPS Margate, Brigadier William Slabbert commended the entire team of detectives involved on achieving this outstanding conviction and sentencing.
