Nelspruit: 25 November 2022 – Two men aged 36 and 50 were arrested on Thursday, 24 November 2022, around 12h15 pm on allegations of stealing copper wire in Mbombela.

Their arrest came after Police from Nelspruit received information about certain individuals that were allegedly carrying copper wire inside a company car in the premises of Transnet. Police at Nelspruit responded and followed the information. Upon arrival at the said place, they found the two inside a vehicle and it is suspected that the employees were about to leave. Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered an orange tool bag suspected to belong to Transnet.

Inside the bag were copper wire, dropper copper wire and contact copper clips, which is estimated to worth at about R8000. The two were then arrested for unlawful possession of copper wire. Police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges including the tampering with essential infrastructure as the investigation unfolds. During their arrest, it is said that the two were still on duty.

They are expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 25 November 2022, facing the said charges.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has welcomed their arrest and lambasted the alleged conduct by the two officials from Transnet.
