SPORT AGAINST GBVF OUTREACH IN DE AAR: NORTHERN CAPE

Kimberley : 20 February 2023 :  Sport Gender Based Violence and Femicide(GBVF) was the message conveyed during  the SAPS Outreach that was held in De Aar on 16 February 2023.The day was supported by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Maj Gen Luntu Ngubelanga,  Pixley Ka Seme District Commissioner,  Maj Gen Nomana Mtukushe and 27 Station Commanders within the District.

External stakeholders included the Emthanjeni Mayor, Cllr Nkumbi, Departments of Health,  COGHSTA, Social Development,  Sports, Arts and Culture, the SANDF and the Provincial Liquor Board.

The day started at the Emthanjeni Primary School where Maj Gen Luntu Ngubelanga coveyed safety hints to scholars and handed over sanitary towels to girls and toiletry bags to the boys at the school. The team then visited the newly renovated Victim Friendly room at the De Aar police station and also handed over victim friendly material and stationery to Britstown, Norvalspont and Phillipstown police stations.

The day concluded with a formal programme at the Merino Park Sports ground including a soccer tournament with six teams competing , namely Pixley Ka Seme District SAPS, SANDF, Social Development, Emthanjeni Municipality, Ajax and Nonyane soccer clubs.

Pastor Davids of the Spiritual Crime Prevention delivered the opening prayer while Mayor Nkumbi welcomed everyone. The Provincial Head for Pro- Active Crime Prevention, Brig Irene Kopeledi and her team spearheaded the programme and outlined the purpose of the day. Several messages of support were delivered  by role players such as Provincial Community Police Board, an  NPO representative, Dr Lulu, SANDF and Social Development.

Gen Ngubelanga reiterated the importance of a multi-disciplinary  approach in the eradication of GBVF and all other contact crime during his keynote address. "A child in sport is a child out of court," said Gen Ngubelanga.

The SANDF soccer team were crowned the winners after beating Emthanjeni Municipality 5-1 in the finals and awarded  a  floating trophy.

The Pixley Ka Seme District Commissioner,  Maj Gen Nomana Mtukushe concluded the day with a vote of thanks to all role players, the community and the soccer teams while the SAPS band rendered musical entertainment.
