Members of the South African Police Service participated in Africa’s biggest running event, which has also earned a reputation as the world’s most beautiful marathon, the Two Oceans Marathon.

The race was held on Saturday, 15 April 2023 in Cape Town. The event also celebrated its 54th anniversary this year and boasts approximately 11 000 participants yearly. Among them were the Northern Cape SAPS’ fittest and fastest.

The participating Northern Cape SAPS Runners ardently known as the ‘Blue Machines’ were Colonel Piet Mokoena, Lieutenant Colonel Nomathemba Mbingo, Lieutenant Colonel Loeto Leberegane, Captain Stephen Mohitlhi, Warrant Officer Cassius Rooibaatjie, Sergeants Lerato Tshegare, Amen Rasmeni, One Machogo, Shoni Pule and Constable Lebogang Motshedi.

The ultra-marathon which is the Western Cape’s most prestigious race, with a 56 kilometres distance is viewed as the most breath-taking course on the globe.

The race route is not a walk in the park as it begins along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in Newlands, as the route becomes challenging and straining to the body, it then continues through a tough climb through Chapman’s Peak, a mountain on the side of the Cape Peninsula, between Hout Bay and Noordhoek which has stunning surroundings. It then heads down the shores of the Indian Ocean. The strenuous race finishes off at the University of Cape Town, where all the current conquerors convene!

Members who expressed their views on the experience described the ultra-marathon as tough. “This was my first ultra-marathon and I conquered it.” Lieutenant Colonel Loeto Leberegane said. It is evident that this race was arduous for the resilient runners, even the most experienced runners found the obstacles and hills gruelling. Veteran runner, 60-year-old Warrant Officer Cassius Rooibaatjie fondly known as “Oom Rooi” says the run was tough but worth it!

Upon conquering the Atlantic and Indian Oceans currents, upbeat Club Coordinator, Colonel Piet Mokoena also encouraged members to take up running as a form of exercise.

Two Oceans novice runner, Lieutenant Colonel Loeto Leberegane is of the view that if you can finish the Two Oceans Marathon, then you can now definitely consider running in the Comrades Marathon, with proper training of course. Based on this view, the road towards a fitter and healthier SAPS is definitely clearer.

This annual race is challenging and very competitive to such an extent that many cannot reach the finish line. Partaking in it is commendable and the members deserve the recognition for completing this race and conquering the current.

The SAPS Management applauds the ‘Blue Machines’ for their outstanding achievement, their perseverance and dedication is indeed commendable.
