WESTERN CAPE: 15 MAY 2023 - The confiscation of firearms and drugs that poses a threat to society, yielded positive results when police members followed up information and arrested suspects in separate incidents in the Cape Metropole.
On Sunday, 14 May 2023, members of the Maitland Flying Squad responded to information that was received via the 10111 call centre of suspects that are busy robbing people in the Athlone area. The members followed up on the information received and spotted a vehicle fitting the description provided to them. The vehicle was stopped and searched upon which an imitation firearm, a packet of crystal meth and a mandrax tablet were found in the vehicle. The suspects aged between 26 and 30 were arrested on charges of possession of an imitation firearm and drugs.
They are scheduled to make their court appearance in the Athlone Magistrates’ court on Tuesday.
In an unrelated intervention on Monday morning, 15 May 2023, members attached to Manenberg SAPS were busy with patrols when they saw three suspicious men walking in the road. When the men noticed the police vehicle approaching, they started to run. The members chased the suspects and apprehended one of them in Beatrix court with a 9mm pistol and ammunition in his possession.
Once charged he will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ court on the mentioned charges.
On Friday, 12 May 2023, members of the Grassy Park Crime Prevention Unit arrested four adult men for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as the possession of drugs in Willow Road, Parkwood. The members stopped and searched a vehicle they were travelling in and found a pistol with ammunition, mandrax tablets and thirty zanax tablets in the vehicle. The suspects were arrested and detained.
The suspects will make their court appearance in the Wynberg Magistrates’ court today.
