WESTERN CAPE: 17 MAY 2023 - The fight to reduce illegal firearms and drugs in the Province is ongoing with efforts of integrated forces proven to yield excellent results with the confiscation of a large amount of drugs as well as an illegal firearm. On Wednesday, 2023-05-17 at about 04:40 members of the Extortion Task Team were performing extortion and crime prevention duties in Macassar area when they received information about a firearms which are being stored at a premises in a flat in Base Street, Macassar.
The members immediately operationalised the information and upon searching the premises, they found a Norinco 9mm without a serial number with ten rounds of ammunition. Subsequently, a 64 year old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He will appear in the Strand Magistrates once charged.
In an unrelated matter, members reacted to information received and pounced on a premises situated in Visagie Street, Parow at about 07:15 this morning where they ensued with a search. During the search, the members found and confiscated a substantial amount of drugs comprising dagga, magic mushrooms as well as an undisclosed amount of cash, believed to be the proceeds of illegal drug trade.
A 31 year old suspect was arrested as a result of the find and is expected to the make his first court appearance once charged for the illegal dealing in drugs.
In addition to the above successes, at about 12:00 earlier today, members attached to the Anti-Economic and Extortion task team operationalised information and searched a premises situated in 40th Street, Ravensmead. During the search they accosted a suspicious man seated next to a bin and upon searching the bin, discovered a black bag containing 1,82 kg of crystal meth (tik) wrapped in brown tape with an estimated street value of R120 000-00. The 63 year old suspect is expected to appear in Goodwood magistrate court on a charge related to derailing in drugs once charged.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lt Gen Thembesile Patekile has lauded the efforts made by members to eradicate the illegal spreading of firearms and drugs. He encourage members to maintain high visibility and to continue the rid our communities from these crime contributors.
