Two robbers who preyed on vulnerable persons in society like the aged and women, have been recently sentenced in the Scottburgh Regional Court recently to an effective 15 years imprisonment for robbery.

On 3 December 2021 an eighty year old woman was relaxing in her home in Second Street Park Rynie, when two unknown men entered the home brandishing a knife and a firearm. They threatened the woman and when her nephew appeared one of the men stabbed him in the hand. They also proceeded to threaten his father. A security company was alerted and one of the suspects was then arrested by the security company on the scene who handed him over to police. He was then charged for robbery with aggravating circumstances and has remained in police custody throughout his trial.

Sbonelo Maphumulo (26) was convicted on 18 May 2023 and sentenced to fifteen years imprisonment of which five years in suspended for a period of five years on condition that he is not found guilty of the same offence during this period. The investigating officer in this matter was Detective Warrant Officer Njabulo Latha.

In another case which occurred on 24 January 2023 a woman was hiking on the N2 near the Sezela Bridge when an unknown man stopped to give her a lift.  He then produced a knife and robbed her of her cellphone. Just then a policeman was driving to work and the woman flagged him down, reporting what had happened and giving a precise description of the vehicle.

The policeman drove after the suspect and found the suspect vehicle stationary on the N2 offering another unsuspecting woman a lift. He was promptly arrested. After a few court appearances, the accused, Enost Vusi Majoka (46) and was convicted on the 11 May 2023 and sentenced to fifteen years  imprisonment of which five years is suspended for a period of five years on condition he is not convicted of robbery during the period of suspension.

The investigating officer was Detective Sergeant Thamsanqa Shozi.
