POTCHEFSTROOM: 30 May 2023 - Ten suspects, aged between 18 and 50, are expected to appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court today for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The suspects’ court appearance emanates from their arrest on Saturday, 27 May 2023, in Potchefstroom, while allegedly on their way to commit a business robbery in Ikageng.
According to information, the suspects have been on Crime Intelligence radar since late last year after information was received about a conspiracy to commit business robbery. Consequently, further information was received on Saturday, 27 May 2023, that the suspects were on their way to rob a certain wholesale and a bottle store in Ikageng. Through an intelligence led operation, the suspects were intercepted driving in a white GWM bakkie with Gauteng registration number. During the arrest, unlicensed firearms and ammunition were found in their vehicle.
The suspects consist of six Malawian nationals and four South Africans. Their vehicle was confiscated for further investigation.
The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, commended all the units that were involved in the operation for the success and also thanked the public for their cooperation that ensured that the suspects' plan does not succeed.
