EASTERN CAPE - Sidima Mgwede (43) of Corana village and Sihle Nqabeni (27) of Chris Hani informal settlement, appeared in Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on 06 June 2023 following their arrest by the members of  Mthatha Cash-In-Transit (CIT) Task Team of the Hawks and Tactical response Team (TRT) and Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) on 5 June 2023 for charges of  possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as possession of suspected stolen property and a stolen motor vehicle.

This is subsequent to the information received about a white Isuzu bakkie that was hijacked from Department of Health Mthatha on 2 June 2023.

The joint operation further received information about a possible armed robbery, that information was then followed up resulting in the team recovering two (2) 9mm pistols with three (3) live rounds and another with fifteen (15) live rounds as well as a hijacked vehicle.

It is alleged that during the search of their homes, the joint operational team recovered a canopy of an Isuzu, unused sim cards, a Nedbank speed point, dagga and a box of prohibited cigarettes at one of the suspect’s residence at an informal settlement.

The matter is remanded to 13 June 2023 for formal bail application.
