OPERATION SHANELA CONTINUES TO MAKE PROGRESS ON CRIME IN THE WESTERN CAPE

WESTERN CAPE: 24 JULY 2023   Operation  Shanela, our high density police initiative comprising stop and searches, roadblocks, vehicle check points, high-visibility patrols, the tracing of wanted suspects and compliance inspections at liquor outlets, and second-hand goods dealers resulted in the arrest of 2576 suspects during the past week in the Western Cape.

The figure of 2576 included arrests for the following serious offences:   

 

  • 24 for illegal possession of firearms
  • 03 for illegal possession of ammunition
  • 58 for possession of dangerous weapon
  • 36 for dealing in drugs
  • 144 for possession of  drugs
  • 40 for murder
  • 2 Car-jacking
  • 12 Robbery aggravating
  • 26 Burglaries both business and residential
  • 12 Robbery both business and residential
  • 22 for attempted murder
  • 58 for rape
  • 227 for Assault GBH
  • 318 for Assault Common
  • 1432 wanted suspects
  • 21 for theft off or from motor vehicle
  • 3 theft of motor vehicle
  • 101 Malicious damage to property
  • 23 driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • 14 illegal immigrants

Seizures from the operations are follows: 

 

  • 796 rounds of ammunition from different calibres
  • 50 Firearms
  • 72,598 litres of liquor
  • 64 dangerous weapons
  • Drugs including 119,98 kg of dagga 5 grams of cocaine, 231,118 grams tik, 1gram of Heroin, 113 grams of Nyaope, 59 tablets (ecstacy), 35 grams ecstacy powder, 266 Mandrax tablets, 8,061 grams Mandrax powder

All the arrested suspects, are expected to make their court appearances in different courts once they have been charged, while the next leg of Operation Shanela is planned.
