PRETORIA – The 31st July 2023 marked the 1st day of a two-day visit by IRMCT delegates to South Africa organised by the Operational Task Team that includes the Hawks Crime Against the State team together with DIRCO, Crime Intelligence, Interpol, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Justice, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and  Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), held in Bellville, Cape Town.

The purpose of the visit gave the Chief Prosecutor of IRMCT, Mr Serge Brammertz and his delegates an opportunity to have a high level meeting with South African authorities to strengthen relations and acknowledge the successful cooperation in the milestone arrest of the  Fugitive Fulgence Kayishema (61). Moreover to express gratitude to the support provided by the Operational Task Team.

Kayishema was arrested by the South African Operational Task Team on 24 May 2023 in Paarl, Western Cape on fraud charges related to the contravention of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002. He is currently wanted on an Interpol Red Notice, which was issued by the UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in connection with the Rwandan genocide in 1994. 

The IRMCT team is accompanied by a team of journalist who are producing a documentary for the podcast about the search of Kayishema. The journalist's  intention is to film the different aspects of the Prosecutor's visit which includes interviews on the side-line outside his meetings and brief footage of the Prosecutors meet and greet of the local authorities.
