POTCHEFSTROOM: 7 August 2023 – In an effort to extensively deal with the  proliferation of illegal firearms in the province, the police have on Friday, 4 August 2023, made another breakthrough when a suspect was apprehended during an intelligence driven operation for possession of an unlicensed firearm. Information was followed-up, leading the team to an identified home in Rockville in Promosa, Ikageng, where a 26-year-old man was arrested after a firearm was discovered in his possession. He will appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court today.

Furthermore, in a multi-disciplinary density operation that was conducted in the Province between Thursday, 3 August 2023 to Sunday, 6 August 2023, a total of 884 arrests were made for a variety of offences including nine for illegal possession of firearms, 101 for dealing in drugs, 30 for illegal dealing in liquor, 68 for possession of drugs, 13 for murder, 125 for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), 52 for assault common, 34 for burglary at residential premises, 14 for burglary at business premises, 35 for malicious damage to property, 35 for driving under the influence of liquor and 53 possible illegal immigrants were taken in for processing by the Department of Home Affairs.

Police also seized alcohol, ammunition, cellular phones, dangerous weapons, a variety of drugs, 10 hand guns, tobacco products and vehicles.

In a last incident reported on Saturday, 5 August 2023, a 33-year-old man entered the Community Service Centre (CSC) at Ikageng police station and pointed members on duty with a firearm and a knife. The members immediately reacted, overpowered and disarmed the suspect. The suspect was immediately arrested and the weapons in his possession seized. He will also appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court today for pointing of a firearm and possession of an unlawful firearm and ammunition.
