KWAZULU-NATAL – Today 21 August 2023, Durban High Court convicted and sentenced Mzo Ntombela (27) to 20 years imprisonment for murder of Captain Zwelakhe Ntombela (50) who was stationed at Durban Metro Police.
Captain Ntombela was shot and killed whilst he was arriving at his home in Umlazi on 3 May 2023. He was then robbed of his private and service pistols. A case of murder was reported at Umlazi police station and the case docket was allocated to Hawks members from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation for intensive investigation.
Mzo was arrested by the Hawks members working together with National intervention Unit in July at Umsinga area where he was hiding. The Captain Ntombela’s firearms were recovered at the accused’s homestead at KwaMaphumulo.
The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General Lesetja Senona welcomed the sentence and commended the members for the good work of presenting a well investigated docket before court. “Hawks members will deal decisively with police killers in the province, I applaud the excellent work of arresting and securing the conviction within three months after the incident”, he said.
