Kimberley: 20 August 2023 - Operation Shanela, the  multi-disciplinary high density operation remains intentional in reclaiming our communities from criminals.  This was evident in the operational successes achieved during intensified operations across the province for the period  Thursday, 17 August 2023 till Sunday, 20 August 2023 with a sharp focus on the reduction of contact and violent crimes in hotspots which  netted a multitude of successes.

Actions and police activities executed during the operations included, vehicle check points (VCP's), stop and searches, foot and vehicle patrols, compliance inspections, drugs and other commodities smuggling and tracing operations by detectives.

Fourty two (42) VCP's and Seventeen (17) roadblocks were held across the province during  which  2991 vehicles and 6355 persons were stopped and searched.

826 compliance inspections were conducted at second-hand dealers, scrapyards, liquor premises, formal and informal businesses as well as mines.

Numerous operational successes were achieved:

In total 339 persons were arrested of which 90 suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, robbery, assault, burglary, theft out of motor vehicle dealing and possession of drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and illegal possession of firearms.

Police actions also resulted in the seizure of dagga worth around R105 000 00 in Kagisho police station precinct in Kimberley, that led to a 61 year old female being arrested.

249 Wanted suspects were traced and brought to book for evading court appearances and contravention of court orders as well as 7 undocumented immigrants were detained and processed by the  Department of Home Affairs Immigration Officials.

Tracing operations were led by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Major General Mmantsheke Lekhele in Kimberley and Upington which added to the list of apprehended wanted suspects.

Police confiscated a number of alcoholic beverages, drugs, ammunition, dangerous weapons and cash amounting to R37 000 00  believed to be the proceeds of crime.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lt General Koliswa Otola revealed that these operational successes are as a direct result of the multi-disciplinary nature of Operation Shanela. And the collaborative efforts between departments are appreciated and she also thanked the community for their role in reporting criminal activities.

Sweeping our streets clean from criminality will ensure a safe and secure environment for all, espescially vulnerable groups.
