1070 ARRESTED THROUGH OPERATION SHANELA IN THE FREE STATE

FREE STATE: 21 August 2023:  High density operation "Shanela" continues to put more emphasis on crime as more than 1000 people were arrested. Between 14 to 20 August 2023, Free State SAPS arrested 1070 people for different crimes. During his speech; Minister of Police Said the aggressive policing approach has been bolstered through Operation Shanela. The effectiveness of the high-density operations are showing in the decline in crime figures. Communities have so far welcomed the aggressive approach to crime fighting. 

To ensure that we maintain the aggressiveness. Roadblocks as well as stops and searches continue throughout the province. For malicious damage to property, 56 suspects were arrested. While enforcing the Second Hand Goods Act, 17 people were arrested for contravention of the Act, and 18 suspects were arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods. Seven suspects were arrested for possession of illegal firearms, while 12 handguns were confiscated. Seven suspects were arrested for murder, while seven were booked in for attempted murder. 158 people were arrested for assault. 

Because of raids and intelligence-led information, 51 suspects were arrested for drug-related crimes and through detective detection operations, 410 suspects were arrested for different crimes and 103 immigrants were brought to book. 49 others were arrested through our multidisciplinary approach to policing.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Free, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, said the successes of Operation "Shanela" continue to ensure that our communities are and feel safe at all times. "Dedication from our members and partnership policing continue to dent the ugly picture of crime in the province. Together, we can surely defeat crime," said Lt Gen Motswenyane.
