Kimberley: 24 September 2023:  The high density "Operation Shanela", netted 148 arrests for an array of crimes while a further 133 daily wanted suspects were traced by detectives across the province this past week in the Northern Cape. 

Police actions were executed from Monday, 18 September 2023 to Sunday, 24 September 2023 and comprised of stop and searches, vehicle checkpoints, cordon and searches, high visibility patrols, compliance inspections at liquor outlets, tracing operations by detectives, visits to businesses and second hands goods dealers. Teams across the province conducted 7695 actions which included  roadblocks and  VCP's during  which 3007 vehicles and 2790 persons were searched and  fines issued for contravention of the law. These actions were also enhanced by numerous high visibility blue light and foot patrols throughout the province. 

A multitude of disruptive actions included 215 stop and searches, cordon and searches at taxi ranks, visibility in shopping malls and complexes and other hotspot areas. The team conducted numerous compliance inspections at second-hand dealers, scrapyards, shebeens, taverns, liquor outlets, firearm dealers, farms and informal businesses. The SAPS across the province made routine visits at ATM's, Business premises, National Key Points, Post Offices and tuckshops.

Outstanding successes achieved included the Kimberley Flying Squad  who followed up on information and arrested a male with an unlicensed firearm after he was allegedly involved in an armed robbery in Petrusburg. In a separate incident in Augrabies the Upington Public Order Policing unit followed up on drug sales at a house and confiscated 520 sachets of drugs worth approximately R7000,00 and arrested one male suspect. All the suspects will appear in their respective courts soon.

867 Persons majority being undocumented persons were arrested during the illicit mining operation conducted in the Kleinzee area on 19 and 20 September 2023, which was led by the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola herself. Numerous mining implements and equipment were also seized during the operations and the Springbok hostel in Kleinzee was totally demolished.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Koliswa Otola reiterated that  the SAPS members and external stakeholders will continue with the high density crime prevention and disruptive actions unabatedly to ensure that we squeeze the space for criminals to operate. And also indicated that we will reclaim our communities from criminals.
