WESTERN CAPE: Philippi police are investigating two separate cases of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition through successful crime prevention operations held in Philippi and Hanover Park. During these operations on Saturday, 2023-10-14, five males were arrested and detained for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.   

The first incident occurred at Weltevrede Road, Philippi at about 06:45 where a suspicious white Toyota Corolla with four male occupants were pulled over. Upon searching the vehicle a 9mm Norinco pistol without a serial number and a large quantity of 9mm rounds were seized. The four males aged between 26 and 34 were arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

The second incident occurred at  approximately 13:00 at a house at Augulus Court, Hanover Park where an Inest pocket revolver without a serial number and rounds were confiscated from a 40 year old suspect.

Police investigations in both cases continues. Once charged all five male suspects are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.

In the aim to reduce hijackings in the Philippi-East policing precinct, New Eisleben Road known for its carjacking’s, had SAPS shift their policing resources to that area by implementing vehicle check points at the mentioned location during peak hours. On Friday night, 2023-10-13, two suspects aged 20 and 23 were arrested at this check point for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. One of the suspects were linked to a warrant of arrest in Eastern Cape. Both suspects are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Monday, 15 August.

Members attached to Lingelethu West SAPS were doing investigations regarding a fraud case where a 42 year old female suspect was arrested for using fraudulent documents in opening an account at MTN. On interviewing the suspect she indicated that she will identify the address where she bought the pay-slip and bank statement. The suspect was booked out to point out the address at Level 1 Ntlazane Road, Harare. On searching the premises numerous forged items were confiscated that could possibly be linked to numerous forgery and uttering matters:
Doctors sick notes
Bank statements
Scheming devices
Bank cards
Cellular phones
USB sticks

A 39 year old suspect found at the premises was arrested. Both suspects were detained at Harare SAPS and they are due to appear in court once charged. 

On Saturday 2023-10-14 members attached to Harare Crime Prevention Unit responded to a complaint of a White Toyota Yaris that was hijacked at Spine Road, Litha Park, Khayelitsha. They recovered the vehicle at Siphumelele informal settlement in Harare with one suspect in it, and a knife on the front passenger seat. SAPS also found one unlicensed firearm and two knives next to the vehicle on the ground.

Furthermore, a black Polo Vivo that was also reported hijacked last week in Harare, Khayelitsha, was also recovered next to the scene.

The 36 year old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm, two counts of possession of hijacked vehicles and possession of dangerous weapons.

The suspect will appear in Khayelitsha Magistrate court once charged.
