OPERATION SHANELA RESULTED IN THE ARREST OF A SUSPECT FOR ALLEGED SMUGGLING OF DAGGA: NELSPRUIT

Nelspruit: 01 November 2023 - Operation Shanela has resulted in the arrest of Majahakangwane Sifundza (41) originating from the Kingdom of Eswatini for alleged dealing in dagga after reportedly attempted to smuggle it from his country into South Africa via the Port of Entry (Mahamba) on 30 October 2023.

A report indicates that Police were conducting their duties when a black VW Golf with registration number plates from the Kingdom of Eswatini emerged and approached the search bay. It was during this time when police became suspicious after sensing a dagga smell from the sparewheel which was placed at the boot of the car. Six black plastic bags containing dagga was discovered weighing at about 1,630 kilograms with an estimated street value of about R6 846,00.

Sifundza was arrested as well as charged for dealing in dagga and appeared at the Piet Retief Magistrate's Court today, Wednesday 01 November 2023. The case was postponed to 08 November 2023 for a formal bail application meanwhile the suspect remained in custody.

The mamagement of the SAPS in Mpumalanga has appreciated the hard work done by members at the Port of Entry. The Police will continue with the operations to fight crime and no stone will be left unturned.
