Kimberley: 26 February 2024 - The Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, officially opened the Sport Is Your Future tournament that is taking place at the AR Abass Stadium in Kimberley on 26 and 27 February 2024. All SAPS Provincial Heads, Station Commanders, within the greater Kimberley area, SAPS members, SAPS Division for Visible Policing, Provincial Police Board, Community Policing Structures, Heads and representatives from government departments and entities, sports participants, athletes, youth and the broader community attended the first day of the tournament.
Day one commenced at 06:00 with a 5km run, led by athletes from the Northern Cape SAPS Marathon Club. The opening devotion was delivered by Chaplain Moseki and the welcoming address by the Provincial Head for Pro Active Policing, Brigadier Irene Kopeledi. The purpose of the day was outlined by Col Ledwaba from the SAPS Division Visible Policing in Tshwane.
In his address, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga reiterated that the aim of the tournament is to reach out to substance users, especially youth, who feel rejected by communities and requested support for the youth and their families and link them with services available to assist them to abandon the abuse of substances. Major General Ngubelanga mentioned that this is partnership policing and collective crime fighting at its best and that the initiative will be rolled out to all five districts across the Northern Cape.
The attendees participated in running, a fun walk, soccer, netball and tug of war. Day two will continue on 27 February 2024 at the AR Abass Stadium and will be attended by the Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola and several other relevant role players who will acknowledge the winners of the different sporting codes.
