Media Statement from Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigation (HAWKS) PRETORIA – Petrus Sydney Mabuza (54) and Nozwelo Mahumnae (21) a student at Unisa appeared briefly at the Hazyview Magistrate Court today. The two were charged with contraventions of the Firearm Control Act, conspiracy to commit crime and various contraventions in terms of the Credit Act. On Tuesday a joint police operation by the Hawks, Counter Intelligence, the Special Task Force, the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory and SANParks led the team to three premises in Mbombela where they managed to seize a firearm barrel, hunting rifle, high calibre firearm rounds, a silencer, an undisclosed number of identity documents, bank cards and SASSA cards. The two are also accused of trafficking rhino horns in Acornhoek, Mpumalanga. Mabuza was remanded in custody whilst Mahumane was granted R20 000 bail with strict conditions. Both suspects will appear on 20 June 2018 for a formal bail application. The Hawks would like to reiterate that it reserve the right not to divulge more information on the operation pending the conclusion of the probe.
