PRETORIA - The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Khehla John Sitole has, in the strongest possible terms, condemned the senseless killing of 49-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Leroy Brewer this morning.

Colonel Brewer, who was attached to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), was driving to work this morning at 06:30 when he was shot at on Lydenburg Road in Nelspruit with what appeared to be heavy calibre weapons by unknown gunmen. Colonel Brewer died on the scene.

Colonel Brewer was a seasoned investigator within the DPCI environment and always excelled in cracking complex cases, particularly related to rhino poaching.

The National Commissioner has called on a multidisciplinary team to mobilise the 72-hour Activation Plan and urged the team not to rest until Colonel Brewer's killers are brought to book.

“The SAPS family and the community have suffered a huge loss,” said General Sitole.

"I have extended my deepest condolences to Colonel Brewer's family and promised a thorough investigation into the Colonel's senseless killing,” added General Sitole.

We are appealing to anyone who may have information on this case to please contact the SAPS on 08600 10111 or information may be communicated via the SAPS MySAPSApp. All information will be treated with the strictest confidence and callers may remain anonymous.
