Shootout with police leads to arrest of wanted suspects

DURBAN – Yesterday at 13:00, a 45-year-old businessperson was at his business premises at Arbour Road in Amanzimtoti serving customers when a group of seven armed men wearing masks and gloves entered the shop instructing him and his customers to not make noise. The victims did as instructed. The suspects ransacked the shop, took seven laptops and robbed an off duty police officer who was also a customer of his service pistol.

They drove off in two getaway vehicles. Police were informed and charges of robbery were opened at Amanzimtoti police station for investigation.

At 13:30, Umlazi K9 Unit police officers were conducting patrols at A-Section in Umlazi when they spotted one of the vehicles involved in the robbery and gave chase. A shootout ensued. Police managed to intercept the vehicle and three suspects were arrested.

A 35-year-old suspect sustained two gunshot wounds on the chest during a shootout and was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Two suspects aged 28 and 34 were detained at the Umlazi police station for robbery, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as attempted murder.

A firearm, 20 rounds of ammunitions, two firearm magazines and six cellphones was recovered from the suspects. They will appear in court soon. Police are searching for the four remaining suspects.
