Media Statement from Mpumalanga Media Centre Pienaar - An Intelligence-driven Sting Operation was executed by members of Crime Intelligence and Gathering, Belfast and Waterval Boven Detectives, in search of two suspects who were involved in a string of serious crimes ranging from robberies (business, house and armed) as well as an escape from lawful custody. The crimes were committed in various areas in the province including Nelspruit, Belfast, Waterval Boven, Pienaar, Kaapmuiden and Tonga. The sting operation yielded positive results as it led to the arrest of one suspect (27) and another one (25) who was fatally wounded. The 27-year-old suspect was arrested in his hideout at Msogwaba Trust in Pienaar near Nelspruit. He was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Further investigation led police to the hideout of the second suspect, the 25-year-old at the Mluti Area in Pienaar. When police arrived and entered his hideout, he fired shots towards the police members and they were forced to retaliate, as a result the suspect was fatally shot. Three firearms, two in the suspect’s possession and one inside his room, as well as ammunition were seized. Further items that were recovered included cell phones and wrist watches, all suspected to have been stolen during the commission of the robberies.
The 27-year-old is expected to appear before the Kanyamazane Magistrate’s Court facing charges of robberies (business, house and armed), escape from lawful custody and an additional charge of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
