PARKTOWN - In a continued effort to disrupt illegal mining activities and fight the proliferation of illegal firearms, the police in Sophiatown arrested three illegal miners and seized an AK-47 rifle with ammunition.

On 23 September 2022, the police in Sophiatown and Langlaagte operationalised information received on illegal mining activities in Bosmont and that suspects are heavily armed. This is the area where six bodies of suspected illegal miners were found about two weeks ago.

The operation, under the Command of the Station Commander of Sophiatown, Brigadier Bonginkosi Ndebele led to the arrest of three men and recovery of one rifle.

The police will continue to strengthen efforts in fighting crime through various crime prevention operations, including the weekly multi-disciplinary Operation O Kae Molao Kae. The public is also urged to join in the fight against crime by reporting any criminal activities on the Crime Stop Line 08600 10111 or alternatively leave anonymous tip-offs on MySAPS App which can be downloaded on any smartphone. All information received will be treated strictest confidence.
