Gqeberha:  The theft and damage of copper and steel cables hampers the provision of basic services and impacts on the infrastructure hence the South African Police Service embraces the fact that the community is standing together in this fight by providing information and assisting police in apprehending suspects.

It is alleged that on Saturday 1 October 2022 at approximately 11:00, Gqeberha K9 and Flying Squad members received information of a break in that occurred at the Windvogel substation. On arrival, the members noticed that all the cables were removed and that the substation was vandalised.  The members were able to identify the suspects involved and the member from Flying Squad arrested one suspect, however the second suspect fled into a house in Bethelsdorp Road.  Gqeberha K9 member Cst Shaneez Daniels gave the necessary warnings and due to noncompliance by the suspect, Cst Daniels utilised her K9 Diesel to assist with apprehending the suspect.

The damages to the Windvogel substation is estimated at R300 000. Multiple cables, copper bars, saws, spanners and side cutters were also confiscated.

Both suspects were detained on charges relating to the Criminal Matters Amendment Act – damage to essential infrastructure.  The suspects will appear in the Gelvandale Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 3 October 2022.
