Media Statement PRETORIA - The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, has issued an urgent directive to the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner to deploy; the Provincial Serious Violent Crime (SVC) investigators to work around the clock in tracking down and apprehending the suspects; involved in the brazen attack on three Members of Parliament in Philippi on Tuesday afternoon. Among the victims was the Chairperson of the Police Portfolio Committee, Mr Ian Cameron. General Masemola has commended the swift response by SAPS members who effected the arrest of one suspect on Tuesday evening. The suspect, who sustained injuries during the incident, was arrested as he sought medical attention at a medical facility in Lentegeur. He remains under police guard in hospital. In condemning the attack, General Masemola said, “this criminal act, which targeted Members of Parliament, is a direct attack on the safety of citizens and will not be tolerated. We are sending a stern warning to all those involved in serious and violent crimes; the SAPS has deployed all available resources to ensure that criminals are hunted down, apprehended, and put behind bars to face the full might of the law.” The National Commissioner further emphasized that the creation of safer communities and the strengthening of business confidence remain the core priorities of the SAPS. He urged community members to stand together with the police by providing reliable information that can lead to the swift arrest of the suspects still at large. Western Cape gang-related crimes continue to receive priority attention through elevated operational and intelligence-led strategic interventions. Ends
