The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo orders Malamulele police to track and trace an awaiting trial fugitive

POLOKWANE - The Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has ordered police to utilize the available resources to search for the awaiting trial prisoner who allegedly escaped from police custody after court appearance at Malamulele.

Reports suggest that the suspect, Thembinkosi Gift Mabunda, 24-years-old who is from Hasani Mbalati village escaped on Friday 10 January 2025 at about 14h00.  It is alleged that when the incident happened the fugitive was with other four awaiting trial prisoners and meant to get into the prisoner's truck when he escaped. The circumstances surrounding the escape is currently under police internal investigation processes.

The escapee, Thembinkosi Gift Mabunda was facing multiple charges including  carjacking.

Currently further charges of escaping from lawful custody and aiding prisoner to escape have been added. More charges may be added as the investigations unfold.
