GQEBERHA - Stepping into a Correctional Facility is not just a physical act, it is a gesture of empathy, a reaffirmation of dignity, and a powerful reminder that every incarcerated woman has a past, a present, and a future. On Wednesday, 14 May 2025, the Nelson Mandela Bay District Women’s Network visited Rooihell Correctional Facility in North End, Gqeberha, to honour, uplift, and show support to the women serving time there. The Internal Structure members came bearing care packages filled with quality toiletries, which included: washing rags, body lotion, sanitary towels, and bathing soaps to the inmates. Offering not just physical essentials but words of encouragement that will echo at the back of their minds. Although 71 inmates were expected, 35 attended the heartfelt engagement. “As we celebrate Mother’s Day and reflect on the role of women, let us not forget those behind bars. They remain mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends, still worthy of love and recognition,” said AC Tammy Africa. “A little compassion can reignite hope,” she ended. The emotional atmosphere was deepened by moving spiritual messages from guest speaker and True FM radio personality, Thabitha Busani, a born-again Christian and motivational speaker. Her words resonated powerfully with the inmates, many of whom expressed their gratitude and shared that they regularly tune into her radio show for inspiration. Pastor NR Goja, known affectionately as Pastor Ningi from the Department of Correctional Services, delivered a soul-stirring message that further inspired reflection and healing. Sergeant Scout encouraged the inmates to equip themselves with knowledge and skills as a prevention measure to not revert to crime. “These tools will help you avoid reoffending and build a better future. Life doesn’t end here—change is still possible,” she urged. Women’s Network Champion, Warrant Officer Mkaza, offered heartfelt encouragement to the inmates to do an introspection and redirect their story. “You may feel set aside, but you are never forgotten. You still have the power to rewrite your story.”
The inmates that were present, as well as the Prison Wardens, were really appreciative of the event as the room was filled with different emotions. Tears were shed, and smiles were visibly worn from ear to ear while dancing and rejoicing in spiritual songs, which clearly resulted in the event being a complete success.
