WESTERN CAPE - The collaboration between the community and police members in Siqalo, an informal settlement in Gugulethu, yielded success when two males were detained for extortion related complaints on Wednesday 16 July 2025.

The disgruntled business community informed the members of Gugulethu SAPS that they are in possession of letters demanding a protection fee. The police members met with the business leaders and planned their approach to bring an end to extortionists who hold the community to ransom.

They deployed the members strategically around identified business premises, waiting on the arrival of the persons of interest. Their patience were rewarded when two males aged 19 and 25 entered the premises. The police members then apprehended the two males for extortion.

Once charged they are expected to make a court appearance in the Athlone Magistrates’ court on the mentioned charge.
