WINBURG - Vigilance displayed by members of Winburg Visible Policing upon responding to a complaint of possible theft of truck tyres about 10 km from Winburg towards Ventersburg, has resulted in the swift arrest of one suspects. Three accomplices managed to evade arrest.
On 13 September 2024 at about 02:30, members responded instantly to the crime scene and noticed a truck parked alongside the N1 road where it was tactically approached. Upon closing in on the truck, members heard someone screaming for assistance.
Four unknown suspects were seen running away from the truck while firing shots in the direction of the SAPS members. Members retaliated and one suspect was shot in the left leg. The suspect was arrested.
The wheel nuts of the truck were loosened as the perpetrators attempted to remove the tyre from the truck. A 26-year-old man from Thokoza, Gauteng Province, was arrested and is under police guard at a hospital in the Free State.
A case of attempted theft and attempted murder cases were opened for investigation. The three remaining suspects driving a white Renault Clio with GP number plates, are still at large.
