Potchefstroom:  On Monday, 20 March 2017, 24 suspects, seven males and 17 females, aged between 19 and 49, are expected to appear in the Lichtenburg Magistrates' Court for possession of suspected stolen property, public violence and malicious damage to property.

The suspects' appearance in court comes after police in Biesiesvlei arrested them on Thursday, 16 March 2017.  The police were summoned to a local secondary school at Itekeng Township after allegations that learners held a 63-year-old principal hostage. The police were informed by learners upon arrival at the school that they do not want the principal and accused him of insulting them.

The incident led to throwing of the principal's car and class’s windowpanes with stones.  A case of malicious damage to property was opened. The incident also led to looting of shops by members of the community.   At this stage, the police are investigating case dockets of public violence and possession of suspected stolen properties.
