Media Statement from National Media Centre Pretoria: 28 November 2017 - The Minister of Police, Mr Fikile Mbalula has presided over the ceremony yesterday to bestow the Sword of Command on the newly appointed National Commissioner of the South African Police Service General Khehla John Sitole at SAPS Academy Tshwane. The Minister was representing the President of the Republic of South Africa, President JG Zuma as well as the Government and people of the Republic of South Africa when he officially bestowed the powers of the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service on General Khehla Sitole. During the ceremony, the Minister read the following citation to the National Commissioner :- “General Sitole, it is your responsibility as the National Police Commissioner to ensure the safety of the citizens and inhabitants of this republic - this is a sacrosanct in the execution of the mandate of the South African Police Service” The Minister went on to congratulate General Sitole on his extraordinary achievements and encouraged him as the leader of the South African Police Service to continue to lead the way in an exemplary manner. In his taking over of the Command, General Sitole read the following citation: “Whereas the post of the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service has been entrusted to me with effect from 22 November 2017; I, General Khehla Sitole solemnly undertake to serve my country with loyalty, courage, dignity and honour; to discharge my duties and responsibilities with zeal and diligence and to set a good example to all those placed under my command. I hereby formally take command of the South African Police Service. General Khehla John Sitole joined the South African Police Service in 1986. General Sitole, born and raised in Standerton, Mpumalanga, boasts 31 years of serving the various communities in this country. He has served in various rank structures, starting as student, and receiving his basic training in 1986 and worked his way up the ranks to senior management positions including the positions of a Provincial Commissioner of the Free State, a Deputy National Commissioner of the SAPS and prior to his appointment as National Commissioner, as Divisional Commissioner of Protection and Security Services. General Sitole is pioneered for being a strategist, with his brainchild that focused on addressing the root causes of crime, the first Provincial Crime Prevention Strategy of Mpumalanga having being used to design the “United Kingdom Crime Strategy”. He went on to conceptualise, among many strategies he has developed, the Free State Crime Prevention Strategy which has been integrated with the National Development Plan as well as the Northern Cape Youth Crime Prevention Strategy which won an international award with the United Nations organisation as South Africa’s best strategy internationally for 2008. He also designed the Fusion Centre Concept, the first provincially, nationally and internationally, which brings both the strategic and operational dimensions together through multi-disciplinary collaboration. This concept was placed at the centre of the Provincial Crime Prevention Strategy as a platform for co-ordination. -End-
