News: Taung fugitive arrested in Zeerust

POTCHEFSTROOM - A wanted 29-year-old Realeboga Raymond Motlhasi was arrested on Saturday, 21 March 2020 at about 12:00 in Motswedi village near Zeerust.  The accused was wanted by the Taung police for cases ranging from Attempted Murder, Assault GBH, Car-Hijacking and Kidnapping.  The crimes were allegedly committed between Sunday, 8 September 2019 and Saturday, 26 January 2020 at Taung’s Lokaleng and Chiefscourt villages respectively.

The arrest came after a follow-up was made on information received from a member of the community.  It is alleged that Motlhasi attempted to flee when the police approached him, but he was caught and detained.  He appeared before the Taung Magistrate’s Court today, 24 March 2020 and was remanded in custody until Wednesday, 22 April 2020 for further investigation.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Ryno Naidoo expressed his gratitude towards the community for providing information to the police which led to the arrest.  He further said that the arrest is an indication that collaboration between the police and the community is key in the fight against crime.
