News: Seven suspects arrested for illegal possession of gold bearing material

POTCHEFSTROOM - A crime intelligence driven operation by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Illegal Mining Team, Tactical Response Team (TRT) in collaboration with the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit (SOCIU) led to apprehension of seven suspects on Thursday, 24 June 2021 at Khuma Location near Stilfontein.

The suspects were nabbed after the members received and operationalised information about people who were allegedly processing gold at a certain house at Extension, 6 in Khuma. According to information, the police found on arrival, seven suspects with gold bearing material.  Furthermore, four gold nuggets with estimated street value of R400 000.00 as well as four cutting torches, 20 hand tools, five gas cylinders, an oxygen cylinder, mercury, 600 batteries and an undisclosed amount of cash were discovered subsequent to the search that was conducted at the place.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 46, are expected to appear before the Stilfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 25 June 2021, for illegal possession of gold and possession of gold bearing material.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) is investigating the case.

 The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena congratulated the members for the sterling job and pointed out that criminals will not be allowed to walk free in the province.
