News: Mayville business robbery and murder suspects swiftly arrested

DURBAN – Mayville police arrested two suspects for business robbery, murder and attempted murder. They are set to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court today.

It is alleged that on 12 October 2021 at 13:45, four armed men entered the business premises situated on Jan Smuts Highway in Mayville and held up the staff members. They took an undisclosed amount of cash and robbed the security guards of their shotguns. A 35-year-old security guard was shot in the head and was declared dead on the scene whilst another employee was shot on the shoulder and was taken to hospital for medical attention. The suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle. Police recovered one of the suspect’s vehicles at the scene.

Later that day, police received a report of carjacking at Lamontville SAPS and proceeded to the police station. Upon interviewing the complainant, it was discovered that the suspects who were seen exiting the vehicle before the robbery used the vehicle that was recovered at the scene. The investigation led to the arrest of the suspect (34) who alleged that he was hijacked. He was charged for perjury and detained at Mayville SAPS.

That evening at 23:30, police received information that another suspect was admitted at hospital after being shot by one of the security guards during the robbery. The team proceeded to the hospital where they arrested a 27-year-old suspect. The suspect is still in hospital under police guard. He will appear in court soon once discharged from hospital. Police are still searching for the remaining suspects.
