News: Three suspects hauled before court for eight killed

CAPE TOWN - The unrelenting efforts of a team of detectives assigned to investigate a multiple murder case opened after eight people were shot and killed in Gugulethu in June 2021, have seen three suspects arrested in July 2022. Two of the suspects were arrested on 20 July 2022 and made a brief appearance in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court. Meanwhile the third suspect was apprehended during a tracing operation on 27 July. He appeared in court in Athlone on Thursday, 28 July 2022.

The protracted investigation commenced after five persons were shot dead by gunmen at a traditional cleansing ceremony in NY 79 in Gugulethu, on 23 July 2021, while three others who sustained serious gunshot wounds, died after being rushed to medical facilities for treatment. Reports at the time of the shooting incident indicated that the gunmen pulled up in a vehicle in front of the home in NY 79 and started shooting before fleeing from the scene.

All three suspects from Philippi East and Gugulethu namely, Thabo Dyasi, Sivuyile Matoti and Lundi Zweni remain in custody and are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, 02 August 2022 for a bail application.

The determination of the investigators in solving the case and bringing the perpetrators to book is commended by Western Cape SAPS management as part of ongoing efforts to root out criminality in local communities.
