GQEBERHA - A police Constable from Gqeberha Flying Squad was commended for his dedication and bravery while off duty on Sunday, 11 February 2024 in Sidwell.

It is alleged that on the mentioned date, at approximately 21:15, Constable Divan Snayers was at home and just getting ready to go to bed, when he heard several gunshots being fired nearby his house in Sidwell. Without any hesitation, he sprang into action by getting into his private vehicle and heading towards the sound. At the same time, he requested for assistance on his community safety group chat.

On arrival at the corners of Shultz and Du Preez Streets in Sidwell, Const Snayers found a person with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

Constable Snayers returned to the scene of crime in Ralton Street, where he secured the scene, and confiscated a Taurus 9mm firearm (serial number filed off) and cartridges. While awaiting for the police vehicle to arrive, the alleged perpetrators returned to the crime scene to retrieve the firearm, however Const Snayers would not have any of it, and staged a brave fight in warding off the suspects and successfully securing the weapon.

It was later established that the victim who resides in Ralton Street, was receiving a food delivery, when he was pointed with a firearm by unknown men. The victim who was in possession of his legal firearm shot towards the suspects who returned fire. During the shootout the victim was shot in the upper body.

A motive for the shooting is unknown and a case of attempted murder was opened and the investigation is ongoing.

Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Ronald Koll lauded the member for his quick thinking and decisive actions. ‘The members’ selfless dedication to duty has not gone unnoticed. Const Snayers actions exemplify the finest qualities of our men and women in blue – courage and unwavering commitment to public safety. His actions serve as a powerful reminder of the selfless individuals who put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities, both on and off duty,’ added Brig Koll.
