Kwa-Zulu Natal, Durban: The National Head of the DPCI, Lieutenant General (Dr/Adv) Godfrey Lebeya accepted an invitation to the Anti-Corruption Day commemoration in honour of the deceased corruption whistle-blower Babita Deokaran held on the 08 December 2024. The commemoration day, which was organised by the Active Citizens Movement (ACM) was held a day before the International Anti-Corruption Day with the theme “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow's Integrity”. The event was divided in two folds. The first part being “The Call to Action” march followed by the Official programme which the National Head was part thereof. In his speech, the National Head of the DPCI, Lieutenant General (Dr/Adv) Godfrey Lebeya, highlighted the DPCI’s commitment to fight the scourge of corruption in South Africa by ensuring that those who are involved in corrupt activities will face the might of the law. He also gave update on the cases of the late Ms Babita Deokaran and Tembisa hospital. Six individuals were arrested and convicted for the murder of Ms Deokaran. General Lebeya said, “What prompted the killing must still be unpacked, we urge anyone with information about the mastermind to come forward. We are on track in the investigations relating to Tembisa hospital. Our eyes are focusing on 89 entities of which 71 received R635 624 441-35. Our original Inquiry has been converted into a criminal docket. We are working side by side by side with the Special Investigating Unit. We have other three priority cases that forms part of the National Priority Crime Operational Committee matters. The details of our investigations are not ripe for public consumption. Rest assured that they are receiving priority attention”. He added that the community should be reminded that DPCI is not only dealing with Tembisa related corruption matters, but have dealt with 3P consulting where R1.2billion is involved. “We hope that the fugitive will be extradited from Europe and be fit to stand trial on his return to join ten others. That case is coming again on 22 January 2025 for trial”, added General Lebeya.
