NORTH WEST: The Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court sentenced David Mogori (37) to 10 years imprisonment on Monday, 15 July 2024, for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Mogori was arrested in October 2018, following a tip-off received by members of the Klerksdorp-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation about a suspect who was seen in possession of firearms, in Kanana Township.
The information was operationalised. Upon searching the suspect’s house, police found three firearms and ammunition. The suspect was subsequently apprehended and charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
After making a series of court appearances, the accused was found guilty on two counts. On count one, unlawful possession of firearms, he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, and on count two, possession of ammunition, he was sentenced to seven (7) years imprisonment. The Court has ordered that the sentences on both counts run concurrently.
Therefore, the accused will serve an effective 10 years imprisonment.
Brigadier Silas Munzhedzi, the acting North West Hawks Head, has welcomed the sentence meted out against the accused. “DPCI remains resolute in its efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms in our communities,” said Brig Munzhedzi.
