LIMPOPO: Mmakoma Dortina Mathabatha, 59 (Project Manager) and Anastasia Kekena, 45 (Payroll Administrator) were convicted for theft of cash by the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court Division sitting in Polokwane on 20 May 2025.
During August 2015, the Home Base Care situated at Zebiediela received an amount of R753 520.00 funding from the Department of Health, whereas it was supposed to get R75 352.00. After noticing an error, the department contacted the accused and inform them about the payment that was made by mistake to their account. They requested them to pay back an amount of R678 168.00 into the account of the department. The accused promised to refund the department, but later they failed as they utilized the whole money.
The officials from the Department of Health consulted the police for assistance. Police opened a case docket of theft and transferred it to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) for investigations. The SCI conducted the investigations and subsequently, handed the docket to the officer of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for decision. The accused were served with court summons and made their first court appearance on 04 April 2025. The accused appeared in court on several occasions culminating in their recent convictions.
The case against the accused has been postponed to 01 July 2025 for pre-sentencing report. The accused are out on their extended bail. The Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks in Limpopo Province Brigadier Madimetja Mokoka has praised the investigating team for the wonderful job.
