KIMBERLEY - Desmond Flames (36), from Galeshewe in Kimberley, was recently found guilty of rape by the Galeshewe Sexual Offences Court and sentenced to ten (10) years’ direct imprisonment.

The conviction stems from an incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 11 August 2019, when the accused raped a 44-year-old woman.

According to evidence presented in court, the victim was asleep at her residence when she was awakened by someone touching her.

Initially believing it to be her boyfriend, she did not react immediately and went back to sleep.

However, she later became suspicious of the individual’s behaviour.

Upon realising that the person in her bed was not her boyfriend, she reported the matter to the police.

A case of rape was subsequently registered at Galeshewe police station and was assigned to Detective Constable Orapeleng Mamapula of the Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

In March 2026, the DNA results were finalised and directly linked the accused to the incident.

He was subsequently found guilty and sentenced accordingly. His name has also been entered into the National Register for Sexual Offenders.

The District Commissioner of Frances Baard District, Major General Gabathata Makgari, commended Detective Constable Mamapula for his dedication and thorough investigation, which ultimately led to the successful conviction.
