NELSPRUIT — On 04 April 2026, Members of the Provincial Anti-Hijacking Task Team in Ehlanzeni successfully apprehended an armed suspect, following an attempted carjacking incident in Kanyamazane on Monday morning. At approximately 08:30, officers were reporting for duty to conduct tracking and tracing operations in the area when one member, while exiting his residence, observed a suspicious situation unfolding nearby. A white Kia vehicle abruptly blocked a Suzuki bakkie, and a passenger later identified as a known courier robbery suspect exited the vehicle and pointed a firearm at the driver. Upon noticing the presence of the police officer, the suspects attempted to flee the scene. In response, the member discharged the firearm towards the armed suspect. Two suspects managed to escape in the vehicle, abandoning their accomplice at the scene. The officer pursued the remaining suspect on foot and successfully apprehended him. Upon searching the suspect, a firearm was recovered from his waistband. The weapon, a 9mm Taurus pistol with its serial number filed off, was loaded with one magazine containing 18 live rounds. The 32-year-old male suspect is expected to appear at the Kanyamazane Magistrate's Court soon, facing charges of attempted carjacking, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. Police have launched a manhunt to trace and arrest the remaining suspects who fled the scene. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi commends the swift and courageous actions of the officer involved, whose intervention prevented a potentially serious crime.
