NORTH WEST - Lucas Sithole, 55 was on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, sentenced to R6000 fine or six months' imprisonment by the Mogwase Magistrates' Court for contravention of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.

Sithole was arrested in September 2025 by members of the Rustenburg-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Mogwase during a multidisciplinary operation targeting illegal mining activities. During the operation, the team recovered a firearm in one of the security officials' vehicles. The driver of the vehicle was asked about the firearm, and he alleged that it belonged to Sithole.

Sithole was traced and arrested for contravention of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000, after he unlawfully issued his personal firearm to a security official and failure to lock away a firearm in a prescribed safe. The accused made several court appearances until he entered into a plea and sentence agreement with the State. The court accepted the plea and sentenced the accused to a R6000 fine or six months' imprisonment.
